Realtek Bluetooth driver

Start with Windows Update and your PC maker for a Realtek Bluetooth driver. Realtek's own site lists a Bluetooth USB driver 1.4.887.3011 for Windows 7, 8.1 and 10, aimed at its combo Wi-Fi chips. It is dated 2018, so a maker driver is better for modern machines.

Step by step

  1. Confirm Realtek made it

In Device Manager, open Bluetooth, then the radio's Properties, Details and Hardware Ids. USB\VID_0BDA means Realtek.

  2. Use Windows Update

Install optional driver updates. Windows ships a generic Bluetooth stack that works with many Realtek radios.

  3. Open your PC maker's page

Laptop makers publish a Realtek Bluetooth package for each model. This is the best source.

  4. Only then use Realtek

Realtek's download list shows a Bluetooth USB driver for its combo Wi-Fi chips. Read its supported chip list before installing.

  5. Restart and re-pair

Restart, remove old pairings and pair again from Settings, Bluetooth and devices.

Realtek Bluetooth is usually part of a combo chip

Most Realtek Bluetooth radios sit beside a Realtek Wi-Fi chip on one card. The radio is a USB device inside the PC even though the card sits in an M.2 slot, which is why its hardware ID starts USB\VID_0BDA rather than PCI. Realtek’s own listing says its Bluetooth driver is required with the Wi-Fi driver for the combo chips named on the page.

The honest source order

Microsoft’s advice is to use Windows Update and then the PC maker. Laptop makers tune the Bluetooth driver for their antenna and audio set-up. Realtek’s page is the fallback, and it lists Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 only, with 2018 dates. It does not list Windows 11, so a maker package or the Windows built-in driver is safer there.

Typical symptoms

Headphones that pair but stutter, and a toggle that vanishes after sleep, are the usual complaints. Try the maker’s newest driver, then Windows Update. Turn off fast start-up in Power options to test. A new Bluetooth radio, not a driver, is the fix if the chip is old and no maker driver exists.
