Get the NVIDIA RTX 4060 driver

Get the RTX 4060 driver from nvidia.com/drivers: choose GeForce RTX 40 Series, then NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060. The newest is Game Ready 621.01, dated October 21, 2026. The laptop RTX 4060 has its own notebook file, and laptop makers often list a tuned version.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the card

Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. A desktop card reads NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060. A laptop reads NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU. Both start from VEN_10DE in the hardware ID.

  2. Pick the matching list

For a desktop use GeForce RTX 40 Series on nvidia.com/drivers. For a laptop use GeForce RTX 40 Series (Notebooks). The files are not interchangeable.

  3. Look at the laptop maker

Laptop makers publish their own graphics package with fan, screen and power settings. Check it first, then fall back to NVIDIA's file.

  4. Download and install

The package is about 1 GB, so leave time. Choose Express, let the screen flicker, and restart when asked.

  5. Check the result

In Device Manager, the Driver tab should show a date of October 21, 2026 or later, and the NVIDIA app should report no pending update.

The RTX 4060 in plain terms

The RTX 4060 belongs to NVIDIA’s Ada Lovelace family. The public PCI ID Repository names the desktop part AD107 and gives it device code 2882. Because the code is so specific, Windows can tell a desktop card from a laptop part before any driver is loaded. In Device Manager before installation, the card often shows as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, which is why people go looking for a driver in the first place.

Laptops use another code

Two laptop entries appear in the repository, 28A0 and 28E0, both labelled RTX 4060 Max-Q or Mobile. The wording matters because Max-Q laptops run the same chip at lower power. NVIDIA keeps notebook drivers on a separate list, called GeForce RTX 40 Series (Notebooks), and the current notebook package has its own details page. A laptop built around the RTX 4060 usually ships with its maker’s utilities too, so installing NVIDIA’s generic file can remove a maker setting. If something you rely on disappears, reinstall the maker’s version.

Which version is current

NVIDIA’s lookup shows Game Ready 621.01 dated October 21, 2026, ahead of 617.42 from October 6, 2026 and 617.14 from September 22, 2026. The notes for 621.01 add support for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, among other titles.

A problem to expect: a failed install

When an RTX 4060 install fails, a half-finished earlier install is a frequent cause. If the installer stops at the Graphics Driver step, restart, close the NVIDIA app and any overlays, and run the installer again. If it still fails, choose Custom and tick Perform a clean installation. That resets the control panel settings, which is a fair trade for a card that now works.

Questions

Is the RTX 4060 the same chip as the RTX 4050?

Not exactly. In the public PCI ID list the desktop RTX 4060 is the AD107 chip at 2882, while a laptop RTX 4050 uses code 28E1. They share the same Ada family and the same driver series.

Do I choose Game Ready or Studio?

Game Ready for games. Studio if you edit video or render 3D scenes. NVIDIA lists both for the GeForce RTX 40 Series.

Why is the download so big?

The package carries the display driver, the control panel and components for several technologies. NVIDIA lists the current Game Ready file at 1.04 GB.

My laptop shows two graphics adapters.

That is normal on laptops with an Intel or AMD graphics chip beside the RTX 4060. Only the NVIDIA entry takes this driver.
