Get the Intel RST driver
Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) drivers come as SetupRST.exe, with one package per processor generation. If Windows setup shows no drives on an Intel VMD system, load iaStorVD.sys from the RST driver files during setup. Check your PC maker's page first, as it supplies the tested version.

The short version
What to install and where it comes from. Every link goes to the manufacturer or Microsoft, never to a copy.

Step by step
Find out if your PC uses VMD
In Device Manager, expand System devices and Storage controllers. An entry with Volume Management Device or VMD in its name means the drives sit behind Intel's VMD controller.
Pick the package for your processor
Intel publishes one RST download for 12th to 15th Gen and another for Core Ultra Series 3. Older generations have their own pages. Your PC maker's copy is the safest choice.
Run SetupRST.exe in Windows
On a working Windows install, run SetupRST.exe and restart. Intel says it then starts the Intel Rapid Storage Management Application install from the Microsoft Store.
For a clean Windows install, extract the driver
On another PC, run SetupRST.exe with the -extractdrivers option. Copy the files to a USB drive. The file you need is iaStorVD.sys, under the Drivers and VMD folders.
Load it at the disk screen
When setup shows no drives, choose Load driver, browse to the VMD folder on the USB drive, pick iaStorVD.sys and then select your disk.
What RST and VMD are
Intel Rapid Storage Technology is the storage driver stack for Intel platforms with RAID or Volume Management Device. VMD is a controller in the processor that sits between the PCIe slots and Windows. When it is switched on, an NVMe drive does not talk to Windows directly. Windows needs Intel’s VMD driver to see it. Intel says RST version 18.0 and later support VMD capable platforms.
The no drives found problem
Many new laptops ship with VMD on. A Windows 11 setup disc built from a plain image has no driver for it, so the disk list is empty. The fix is the file iaStorVD.sys from Intel’s RST package. Your PC maker may also publish a ready made storage driver, usually called Intel Rapid Storage Technology or VMD driver, on its support page. Extract it to a USB stick and load it from the setup screen.
Intel’s article says to use UEFI boot, not Legacy, and to leave the BIOS VMD options alone once Windows is running.
Which package for which PC
The two packages above are for Windows 11 only. Both are small, around 8 MB. Older platforms use older RST packages on Intel’s site. Match the package to your processor generation and, if the PC maker offers one, prefer theirs.
Questions
Windows setup says no drives were found. What now?
The BIOS has VMD switched on and Windows has no driver for it. Load iaStorVD.sys from the Intel RST driver files, or ask your PC maker about the BIOS storage mode. Do not change that mode on a PC that already boots.
Can I remove the RST VMD driver later?
No. Intel warns that removing it, or changing the VMD setting in the BIOS after Windows is installed, can cause an Inaccessible Boot Device blue screen and possible data loss.
Do I need RST for a single NVMe drive?
Only if the system uses VMD. Intel also says the driver is needed on VMD systems to avoid a yellow mark in Device Manager, even with no drives attached.
Does it work on Linux?
Intel states that the RST driver does not support Linux.
