Get the Intel chipset driver

Intel's chipset driver is a package called Intel Chipset Device Software (formerly Chipset INF Utility), file SetupChipset.exe. It installs INF files that tell Windows the names of the chipset parts. Get it from your PC or motherboard maker first, or from Intel's download page for Windows 10 and 11.

Step by step

  1. Check for yellow marks first

Open Device Manager and look for devices under Other devices or with a yellow mark. If System devices lists everything by name, the chipset is already recognised and you may not need anything.

  2. Run Windows Update

Go to Settings, Windows Update, Check for updates, then look under Advanced options, Optional updates. Intel says an update through Windows Update can replace existing drivers on some systems, so note what changes.

  3. Look on your PC maker's page

Enter the model or serial number on the laptop or motherboard maker's support site and open the Chipset section. That version was tested on your board.

  4. Use Intel's page if the maker has nothing

Download Intel Chipset Device Software from Intel's page, accept the licence and run SetupChipset.exe. It lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 x64 as supported.

  5. Restart and recheck

Restart, open Device Manager again and confirm the unknown devices now have names. Leave devices that still show a mark for their own driver pages.

What the Intel chipset driver actually is

The word driver is a little generous here. Intel Chipset Device Software installs INF files, which are plain text setup files. They tell Windows what each part of the chipset is called, so Device Manager shows names such as USB xHCI Host Controller instead of Base System Device. Intel renamed the package from Chipset INF Utility. The download page still carries the old name in its address.

Which devices carry Intel’s code

Chipset parts have PCI hardware IDs that begin with VEN_8086, Intel’s code in the public PCI ID Repository. The table above shows four USB host controllers from the 500, 600 and 700 series chipset families as examples. Open a device, pick the Details tab and choose Hardware Ids to see yours. If the line starts with something else, the part is not Intel’s.

When to bother with it

If every device has a name and works, leave it alone. Install it on a fresh Windows setup, after a board swap, or when Device Manager lists unknown PCI devices. Intel also has an article for installing the utility on devices the operating system does not recognise.

Boards from Dell, HP, Lenovo, ASUS and others often carry their own chipset packages. Use theirs when it exists. It was built for that board, and the PC maker will keep it in step with other firmware.

Questions

Will the chipset driver make my PC faster?

No. Intel's package installs INF files that identify the chipset to Windows. It fixes unnamed devices and missing entries, not frame rates or file speed.

Does it include the graphics driver?

Intel's support article lists the Chipset Device Software, Intel Graphics Drivers and an Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver as separate items. Get graphics from the PC maker or Intel's graphics page.

I have an AMD processor. Is this the right page?

No. This page is for Intel boards. AMD boards use AMD's own chipset package, covered on the AMD chipset driver page.

Windows Update changed my drivers and something broke.

Intel documents a case where a chipset update through Windows Update overwrites existing drivers and removes functions. Roll the device back in Device Manager and install the PC maker's package.
