Step by step

  1. Read the adapter name

Device Manager, Display adapters. It should say Intel(R) HD Graphics 620, not UHD.

  2. Check hardware IDs

On the Details tab, choose Hardware Ids. DEV_5916 or DEV_5921 confirms the chip.

  3. Ask Windows Update

Look under Optional updates for an Intel display driver, and install it if listed.

  4. Visit the PC maker

Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer and ASUS all post video drivers per model. These often fix sleep and brightness issues Intel's generic build ignores.

  5. Install Intel's package if needed

Download gfx_win_101.2145.exe from Intel's 7th to 10th Gen page. Restart afterwards.

What the HD 620 is

Intel HD Graphics 620 is integrated graphics in Kaby Lake U-series laptop processors, the 7th Gen. It has two entries in the PCI ID Repository. Both show up as Intel HD Graphics 620 in Device Manager. The sibling UHD 620 is a different label on later chips.

Where the driver lives on intel.com

Intel’s support page for HD Graphics 620 points to the 7th to 10th Gen package. It lists HD Graphics 610, 615, 620 and 630 among its supported products. The installer is 278.1 MB and comes as gfx_win_101.2145.exe.

Legacy support in plain terms

Under Intel’s legacy model, which began July 27, 2022 for these generations, Intel ships critical fixes and security fixes. New releases arrive quarterly or as needed. Do not expect speed gains in games.

Installing safely

Create a restore point first, since a display driver swap can leave a black screen on some laptops. Windows can recover with Win+Ctrl+Shift+B, which restarts the graphics driver.

Questions

Is there a separate Windows 11 driver?

No. Intel's 7th to 10th Gen package lists Windows 11 and Windows 10 builds from 1809 to 22H2.

Should I update if everything works?

Usually not. If the screen is fine, keep the maker's driver. Update when you see glitches, or want the security fixes Intel still ships.

Is HD 620 a 6th Gen chip?

No. Its codename is Kaby Lake, which is 7th Gen.

What if install fails with an error?

Your maker may block generic drivers on that model. Use the maker's own download instead.
