Step by step

  1. Confirm the chip

Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. Check Hardware Ids for DEV_0162 or DEV_0166.

  2. Look at Windows Update first

Windows Update may already hold a working display driver. Install anything under Optional updates.

  3. Check the PC maker

Search your exact model on the maker's support site. If it lists a graphics driver, that one is the safest pick.

  4. Use Intel's 15.33 package

On Intel's page, pick win64 for 64-bit Windows. The self-installing .exe suits normal users, the .zip is for IT staff.

  5. Restart and test

Restart and check display settings. If the screen is wrong, return to the previous driver with Roll Back Driver.

What the HD 4000 is

Intel HD Graphics 4000 is the integrated GPU of Ivy Bridge, the 3rd Gen Core processors from 2012. The PCI ID Repository lists a desktop entry and a mobile entry. Many laptops from that period still use it.

What Intel offers

Intel’s driver 15.33.53.5161 covers HD Graphics 4000, HD Graphics 5000 and HD Graphics for 3rd Generation Intel Processors. The 64-bit installer is 120.5 MB, the 32-bit one is 69.1 MB. Intel says some manufacturers modify this driver, so check with yours before replacing it.

A warning on end of life

The page says Intel has marked this software End of Life. It states the driver may contain security vulnerabilities and that Intel does not plan to release fixes. That is the opposite of newer chips, which still receive security updates.

What this means for you

If the PC works, there is little to gain by changing drivers. Keep Windows itself up to date, and consider newer hardware for long term use.

Questions

Is HD Graphics 4000 supported on Windows 11?

Intel's page lists Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 only. Windows 11 officially needs newer processors, so the chip's driver path ends at Windows 10.

Is the driver safe to install?

Intel labels the page End of Life and says the software may contain security vulnerabilities that it does not plan to fix. Install it only on a PC you cannot upgrade.

Why is there no newer driver?

Intel stopped development of this branch. Its newest packages target later generations, such as 7th to 10th Gen.

Which is the right file, exe or zip?

The exe installs by itself. The zip is meant for developers and IT professionals.
