HP drivers for your PC

Get HP drivers from HP Software and Driver Downloads: pick laptop or desktop, let HP detect the PC or type its serial number, then install the drivers listed for that model. HP Support Assistant, included on new HP PCs, can check for and install driver and firmware updates for you.

Step by step

  1. Check Windows Update

Install what Windows Update offers, including the driver list under Advanced options, Optional updates. Many HP drivers reach your PC that way without any extra step.

  2. Find the serial and product number

On an HP notebook, hold Fn and press Esc. The HP System Information window shows the product name, product number and serial number. The same details are on the label underneath.

  3. Choose your product on HP's driver page

Open HP Software and Driver Downloads, select Laptop or Desktop, then let the page identify your PC or type the serial number. HP opens the support page for that exact model.

  4. Download by category

Confirm the Windows version HP shows, then expand categories such as Driver, Chipset, Graphics, Network and BIOS. Install chipset items before the others and restart when asked.

  5. Turn on updates in HP Support Assistant

Open HP Support Assistant and check for updates. You can let it install new drivers and firmware on its own, or only notify you so you choose.

HP Support Assistant in short

HP ships this app on its new desktop and notebook PCs. It needs Windows 10 RS4 or later. Besides drivers, it handles firmware for supported PCs and printers, and it helps you manage the HP devices connected to your PC. If you removed it, the download is on HP’s own Support Assistant page, not on a mirror site.

Two numbers, one PC

HP labels carry both a product number and a serial number, and people often mix them up. The product number points to a model family in one setup, so a store might sell thousands of units under it. The serial number identifies only your machine. When the driver page asks, the serial number gives the narrowest list, and it also lets HP check your warranty.

BIOS updates on HP machines

HP lists BIOS updates next to the drivers on your model’s page, and HP Support Assistant can deliver them too. Keep a laptop on its charger, save your work and let the PC restart on its own while the update runs. If BitLocker protects your drive, suspend it in Manage BitLocker first so Windows does not ask for the recovery key afterwards.

Questions

Product number or serial number?

The product number names your model and configuration, so many PCs share it. The serial number belongs to your unit alone. Either one finds your drivers; the serial number is the more precise.

Does HP Support Assistant work on ARM PCs?

No. HP states that HP Support Assistant is not supported on ARM devices. On an HP laptop with an ARM chip, use Windows Update and your model's page on HP's driver site.

Can it help with my HP printer too?

Yes. HP Support Assistant gives access to support tools and updates for HP printers as well as PCs, and you can install it on a PC from another brand for that reason.

Fn and Esc does nothing. What now?

Read the label on the bottom of the laptop, or open HP Support Assistant, which shows your device details. On a desktop, the label is usually on the back or side of the case.
