Find the right webcam driver

Most USB webcams use the USB Video Class (UVC) driver that comes with Windows, Usbvideo.sys, so there is nothing to download. Built-in laptop cameras get their driver from Windows Update or the laptop maker. Maker software is only for extras like zoom and color settings.

Step by step

  1. Plug it in and wait

Connect the webcam to a USB port on the PC. Windows loads the UVC driver on its own and the camera should appear in Device Manager under Cameras.

  2. Open the Camera app

Search for Camera in Start and open it. If the picture shows, the driver works and any other app problem is a privacy or app setting.

  3. Check privacy permission

Open Settings, Privacy & security, Camera. Turn on camera access and allow apps to use it.

  4. Look in Device Manager

Open Device Manager and expand Cameras and Imaging devices. A yellow mark or an Unknown device means the driver did not load.

  5. Reinstall the camera

Right-click the camera, choose Uninstall device, unplug it, restart and reconnect. Windows reinstalls the class driver.

  6. Try a maker driver for built-in cameras

For a laptop camera, use Windows Update or your laptop maker's support page for the model, and install the camera or chipset package.

Built-in driver first

Microsoft describes the USB Video Class driver as a Microsoft-provided AVStream minidriver. Vendors build hardware to the USB video specification rather than writing a driver, and Windows queries the hardware to learn what it can do. Microsoft’s USB class driver list names Usbvideo.sys for the video class. That covers nearly every plug-in webcam sold today.

Laptop cameras

A camera inside a laptop is usually a UVC device on an internal USB link, so it uses the same driver. Some newer models add extra processing, and the laptop maker supplies a package for it. If the built-in camera vanished after an update, check Windows Update first and then the maker’s page for your exact model.

Why maker software exists

Microsoft’s implementation guide says that all UVC based cameras must use the inbox UVC driver, with any vendor extensions built as a Device MFT. So a brand’s app does not replace the driver; it adds to it. Logitech, for example, sells webcams that appear in the public ID list with names such as C270, C920 and C922, and those work in Windows without a Logitech driver.

When no camera shows at all

If nothing is under Cameras or Imaging devices, the problem is likely a cable, a port or a privacy switch on the laptop. Our USB guide covers port and cable checks.

Questions

Does my webcam need a driver CD?

Not if it follows the USB Video Class specification. Microsoft says UVC devices work with the built-in driver instead of a vendor driver.

Which Windows versions have the UVC driver?

Microsoft's guide says an inbox UVC driver is provided starting in Windows 10 for devices compliant with UVC 1.0 to 1.5.

Why does the maker offer software?

Microsoft says vendor extensions must be implemented as a Device MFT on top of the inbox driver. That software adds options such as framing or color controls.

Only one app can use the camera.

Close other apps that hold it, such as a meeting tool. Windows normally allows one app at a time on many cameras.
