Get the Thunderbolt driver

On Windows 11 you do not need to download a Thunderbolt driver: Intel says it is built into the operating system. Windows 10 may need the Thunderbolt driver from the PC maker. If a dock or drive is not detected, update the PC maker's BIOS and Thunderbolt firmware, then check Windows Update.

Step by step

  1. Check your Windows version

Press Windows key and R, type winver. On Windows 11 the driver is already there. On Windows 10, continue below.

  2. Look for the Thunderbolt entry

In Device Manager, expand System devices and look for a Thunderbolt controller. A yellow mark here means the driver or firmware is missing.

  3. Update the BIOS and firmware

Open your PC maker's support page. Install the newest BIOS and any Thunderbolt firmware or Thunderbolt driver listed for your model.

  4. Run Windows Update

Install optional updates and restart. Then unplug and reconnect the dock or drive.

  5. Check the cable and port

Use a cable marked for Thunderbolt. A plain USB cable can charge a device but fail to link a dock.

Windows 11 has it built in

Intel’s support article on Thunderbolt for NUC products states that Windows 11 does not require a Thunderbolt driver, as it is built into the operating system. Intel also notes that no Thunderbolt drivers are listed for Intel NUC on Windows 11. The overview page for Thunderbolt makes a similar point for Thunderbolt 5: no extra software is needed on supported Windows 11 releases.

So the search for a download is usually the wrong move. The cause of a failed dock is more often an old BIOS, an old dock firmware, or a cable that is not Thunderbolt rated.

Windows 10 and the controller name

Windows 10 may still need a Thunderbolt driver, which the PC maker supplies for its own board. In Device Manager the controller is called a Thunderbolt NHI, short for native host interface. The PCI IDs in the table cover Thunderbolt 3, 4 and 5 controllers, from Alpine Ridge to Barlow Ridge. Open Hardware Ids on the device to see which yours is.

Security note

Intel’s advisory INTEL-SA-00533 recommends that Thunderbolt DCH drivers for Windows are at version 1.41.1094 or later. Your PC maker normally ships these through BIOS or driver updates, so keep both current. Do not copy drivers from a different laptop. Thunderbolt hardware is tied to the board design.

Questions

Where can I download a Thunderbolt driver for Windows 11?

Intel states Windows 11 does not need one, because the driver is part of the operating system. A listed download is mostly for Windows 10 or specific Intel NUC models.

Is there a security update for the Thunderbolt driver?

Intel's advisory INTEL-SA-00533 recommends Intel Thunderbolt DCH drivers for Windows at version 1.41.1094 or later. Use your PC maker's current package.

What about Thunderbolt 5?

Intel's overview says you do not need extra software for it on supported Windows 11 versions. Intel's PCI list names the Barlow Ridge controllers.

My dock works on USB but not Thunderbolt.

Check the dock's own firmware on its maker's page and the BIOS setting for Thunderbolt security. Both are covered by the PC maker.
