Prolific PL2303 driver for Windows
Download the Prolific PL2303 driver from prolific.com.tw. The Windows Driver Installer Setup Program, version 4.10.0.0 built 2026-07-16 on the maker page, covers Windows 7 to 11 and the PL2303 HXD and G-series chips. Prolific lists PL2303TA, HXD, RA, EA and SA as discontinued, so older adapters may need extra care.

The short version
What to install and where it comes from. Every link goes to the manufacturer or Microsoft, never to a copy.
Official files only, nothing bundled
Step by step
Read the IDs
In Device Manager open the adapter's Properties, Details, Hardware Ids. VID_067B means a Prolific chip. Note the PID, usually 2303.
Check the adapter's seller or maker
Look for the chip name on the cable or box. Cables sold as PL2303 may not all use the same generation of chip.
Open Prolific's page
Use the PL2303 page on prolific.com.tw and find Drivers and Software. Download the Windows Driver Installer Setup Program.
Run the installer
Unzip and run the setup as administrator. Replug the adapter when it finishes.
Check Ports
A working adapter appears as Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port with a COM number. A yellow warning needs the steps in the FAQ below.
What PL2303 is
PL2303 is the name of a family of USB-to-serial chips from Prolific Technology, a Taiwan company. They sit inside serial cables for GPS units, label printers, point-of-sale gear, routers and lab devices. In the public USB ID list, Prolific is vendor 067B, and the product code 2303 means a PL2303 serial port.
The name covers several generations. Prolific’s product page for the USB 1.1 line now shows G-series chips: PL2303GT, GR, GE, GC, GS, GL and GD. Next to the driver links, the page also carries a note that PL2303TA, HXD, RA, EA and SA are discontinued.
What the driver page offers
The PL2303GD page lists a Windows Driver Installer Setup Program, installer version 4.10.0.0 with build date 2026-07-16. It names Windows 7, 8.1, 10 and 11 as supported. The page lists Windows 11 64-bit WDF WHQL drivers for PL2303G at v5.2.12.0 dated 07/07/2026 and for PL2303HXD at v3.9.7.0 dated 12/30/2025. It also says the package can be fetched through Windows Update. File sizes are not shown there.
Old adapters and Windows 11
This is where most complaints come from. A cheap cable made years ago may use a chip generation that Prolific no longer lists, so a new driver may not bring it back. If the adapter works on an older PC, keep using it there. For new work, buy a cable with a current chip. Do not take driver files from forums or archive sites. Prolific did not list a counterfeit notice that we could read, so we make no claim on that subject.
One more note
If your device is a PL2303GD, Prolific says it needs no custom driver, because Windows 10 and later already include one for CDC devices. See our USB serial driver page for how that works.
Questions
My adapter shows a yellow warning on Windows 11.
Prolific's list marks several older chips as discontinued, and newer drivers may not support them. Check the chip name, use Prolific's installer, and if it still fails, replace the cable with a current one.
What does Prolific say about counterfeit chips?
We did not find a notice about counterfeit chips on the Prolific pages we opened today. Buy adapters from reputable sellers and check the chip name.
Is Prolific's page the only source?
For the chip driver, yes. The adapter maker may publish its own package for a cable under its brand.
Do the G-series chips need the installer?
The PL2303GD page says its chip uses the standard USB CDC class that Windows supports natively. The installer is for the virtual COM port features.
