Get the Intel I225-V driver
The Intel I225-V driver is in Intel's Network Adapter Driver for Windows 11 and Windows 10 packages, version 31.3, which list the I225-V as supported. On a motherboard with the chip, your board maker's LAN driver is the safer first choice. The I225-V is a single port 2.5 Gigabit controller.

Match the first line of Hardware Ids in Device Manager (Properties, Details) against this list. Names come from the public PCI ID Repository.
The short version
What to install and where it comes from. Every link goes to the manufacturer or Microsoft, never to a copy.
Official files only, nothing bundled
Step by step
Confirm it is an I225-V
In Device Manager open the adapter, then Properties, Details and Hardware Ids. A line with VEN_8086&DEV_15F3 is the I225-V. DEV_15F2 is the I225-LM and DEV_0D9F is the I225-IT.
Look at your board's LAN section
On the motherboard maker's support page for your exact model, open the LAN or Ethernet driver list. Many boards carry a tested I225-V version there.
Download Intel's package for your Windows
Open the Windows 11 or Windows 10 Network Adapter Driver page on intel.com and download Wired_driver_31.3_x64.zip. Accept the licence when asked.
Do a clean install
Extract the zip, run the setup file as administrator and choose to install the driver. Restart afterwards.
Check the negotiated speed
Open Settings, Network and internet, Ethernet, and look at the link speed. A 2.5 Gigabit link needs a 2.5 Gigabit switch or router port and a Cat 5e or better cable.
What the I225-V is
The I225-V is Intel’s 2.5 Gigabit client Ethernet controller. Intel launched it in the fourth quarter of 2019 under the code name Foxville. It has one port, talks to the system over a PCIe x1 Gen 2 link and supports jumbo frames. Intel’s specification page shows an expected discontinuance of the first half of 2027, so new boards will move to later parts, but many existing boards still carry it.
Which driver branch covers it
Intel’s Windows 11 and Windows 10 Network Adapter Driver pages both list the I225-V, together with the I225-LM, I225-IT and I225-K. Both are version 31.3, dated October 16, 2026, and 38.8 MB. If a board maker supplies its own driver, that copy has been tested on the board and may carry board specific settings. Intel’s own file is the fallback when the maker’s page is old or missing.
V, LM and IT differ in features, not just letters
Intel’s comparison article groups the LM and IT parts together and sets the V part apart. Intel vPro works only on Windows and only on LM and IT. Teaming and VLAN are listed for LM and IT, and Windows Server support is listed for LM and IT only. For a home desktop on Windows 11 none of that matters, but it explains why an office image may not accept a V part.
Questions
My connection drops now and then. What should I try?
Update to the board maker's newest LAN driver, then Intel's package, one at a time. Change the cable and the switch port too. Test with the router set to 1 Gigabit if the 2.5 Gigabit link keeps failing.
Does the I225-V support teaming and VLANs?
Intel's feature table says teaming and VLAN are listed for the LM and IT variants, not the V variant, and notes third party software is needed. The V variant also has no Windows Server support listed.
Is the I225-V the same as the I226-V?
No. They are separate chips from the same family with different device IDs. The I226-V is a later part and has its own entries in Intel's driver list.
Windows shows it as a basic adapter. Why?
Windows can load a generic driver when the Intel one is missing. Installing the maker's or Intel's package replaces it.
