AMD High Definition Audio Device
AMD High Definition Audio Device is the sound output built into Radeon graphics and many Ryzen chips, used for HDMI and DisplayPort audio. Install it through AMD's graphics driver from amd.com/support, or take the laptop maker's version first on a notebook. Windows' own High Definition Audio driver also works as a basic fallback.

Step by step
Find the device
Open Device Manager and expand Sound, video and game controllers. Look for AMD High Definition Audio Device. A yellow mark or an entry under Other devices means no driver is loaded.
Read the hardware ID
Open Properties, Details, Hardware Ids. A line starting PCI\VEN_1002 confirms AMD made the audio function. Compare the DEV code with the list on this page.
Laptop first
On a laptop, open the maker's support page for your exact model and look under Graphics or Audio. Makers often tune the AMD package for their own machines.
Then AMD's package
On a desktop card, or if the laptop maker has nothing newer, download AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition from amd.com and run it. The installer offers Default, Minimal and Driver Only types.
Select the display
Open Settings, System, Sound and choose the monitor or TV that appears as the output. Restart first if it is not listed.
Why AMD has an audio device
Radeon graphics cards, and the graphics block inside many Ryzen processors, can push sound through a display cable. To do that the chip carries a small audio function. Windows names it AMD High Definition Audio Device. It is separate from the jack on the side of your laptop or the back of your desktop, which is usually handled by a Realtek or similar codec.
The public PCI ID Repository lists many of these audio functions under AMD’s vendor code 1002, with names like Renoir/Cezanne HDMI/DP Audio Controller. The codes above are only a sample. Your own code may differ and still be a genuine AMD part.
Which driver to use
The audio driver is built into AMD’s graphics package. On a desktop card, install AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition from amd.com. On a laptop, start with the maker’s page because makers adapt the package for their hardware. Microsoft says Windows supplies its own High Definition Audio class driver, and a vendor driver only adds extra features. So a basic version of HDMI sound can work with no AMD package at all.
When it breaks
Reports often show the same pattern: HDMI sound is fine, then a graphics update changes the output and the TV is no longer the default. Check Sound settings first. If the device is gone or has a warning, run the AMD installer again, restart, and pick the display again. Avoid third-party driver tools. They cannot know which AMD audio part your PC uses and may install a mismatched file.
Questions
Why do I have an AMD audio device on a Ryzen laptop?
Many Ryzen chips include Radeon graphics. That graphics block has its own audio function, which sends sound out of the HDMI or USB-C display port. Headphone jack sound comes from a different device, often Realtek.
It shows a yellow warning in Device Manager.
Reinstall the graphics driver from the laptop maker or AMD. If the warning stays, right-click the device and choose Update driver, then Browse my computer and Let me pick, and choose High Definition Audio Device.
Is AMD Software the only way to get it?
The audio driver normally arrives with AMD's graphics package, so look there or at your laptop maker first. Do not hunt for a separate audio file on other sites.
No sound after an AMD driver update.
Open Sound settings and check the output did not switch. If it did not, use Roll Back Driver on the audio device or install the maker's earlier version.
